MALACHITE
: The name is derived from
the Greek word "Malakhe" meaning
"Mallow", evidently because of the
colour. It is also known as the "Kidney
Stone". It is not often used as a gem.
It is much admired, as an ornamental
material and is quite highly priced for
its category, especially when the
attractiveness of the material is
matched by fine workmanship.
Appearance :
The colour is always green,
varying from a mid green which can be
described as mallow green, to very dark
even blackish green. It has a very
striking colour.
Occurrence :
Large quantities are found in Africa,
Australia, Russia, U.S.A., Zambia.
Substitute :
It has not been imitated and is not
produced synthetically.
