YELLOW
SAPPHIRE : This is the name
given to the yellow variety of Corundum.
It was formerly known as "Oriental
Topaz". All varieties of Corundum ,
except the red variety is known as
Sapphire. Like all other, the yellow
type can be distinguished from the rest
by its lustre. The yellow colour is not
found in any other gem except citrine
which is rather less lustrous. The Hindi
Name for this Gemstone is "PUKHRAJ".
Appearance :
Yellow Sapphire may occur in quite a
wide range of colours, from pale yellow
to gold, honey and brownish yellow
colour. The lighter, brighter colours
are the most common. Like all other, the
yellow type can be distinguished from
the rest by its lustre. The yellow
colour is not found in any other gem
except citrine which is rather less
lustrous.
Occurrence :
This Gem is found in the Metamorphic or
Pegmetite Occurrences. Most Yellow
Sapphires come from Sri Lanka, Burma,
Australia, Thailand and U.S.A (Montana).
Substitutes :
The most common substitutes of this gem
are Topaz, Citrine, Synthetic Yellow
Sapphire and Yellow Glass.
